Nokia, the global manufacturer of mobile phones, is suing Apple Inc. in federal court, claiming that the popular iPhone uses patented wireless technology.

Nokia Corp. claims that the iPhone violates 10 patents covering both mobile telephone and wireless Internet.

The company also said that 40 manufacturers of cellular phones have got these licenses from Nokia, but Apple has not done.

An Apple representative did not return calls seeking comment yesterday.

The companies developing mobile technologies regularly sue each other over patents. The usual result is that the defendant agrees to pay royalties, or the parties agree to share each other’s patents.

The lawsuit was filed in District Court U. S. Wilmington, Delaware.
